The Haunted House

The Haunted House

Footsteps resonate on the creaking floor
Rusted hinges squirm on the gnarly door
Window shutters fluster to and fro
Sinister ghosts frolic amidst an ominous glow

Welcome to the haunted house
Danger has made extinct the lowly mouse
Fireplaces cast a blackened fire
Eerie howls so too echo from the Baskerville mire

Stolen treasures displayed in velvet-lined cases
Shadowy outlines look on with criminal faces
The grandfather clock chimes fear at the hour of mid-night
A once happy place transformed to a menacing fright

The neighboring homes are ravaged by the same affliction
Every house the victim of a mind-controlled addiction
Life appears not through the muddied window pane
Humanity has found comfort in the crevices of a backyard lane.

Thank you,
Joseph Pede
