A More Wanting Night

A More Wanting Night

Day has found a more wanting night
Winds carry the rotting yellow leaves from yard to yard
Petrified green grass edges gradually into a deeper sleep
Concrete sidewalks carry the weight of bulkier shadows

Crows departed from atop the telephone lines
Sparrows find comfort amongst the barren branches
Rambunctious squirrels hollow a home in unsuspecting bark
Raccoons scurry to find a winter home in one Santa’s forgotten chimneys

Inside, light bulbs battle to overcome the darkness
Closeted blankets now comfort the cold sofa and feet
Fire wood crackles in the hollow of the soot-lined chimney
All life is hibernating to some degree

Thank you,
Joseph Pede
