Great Stone Churches

Great Stone Churches

Great stone churches built long ago
Masons’ chisels driven to surmount the beauty of the baron’s chateau
Rigging and scaffolding would hold the quarry’s finest
Reaching to the heavens to honour His Highness

Time, double time and centuries would see the walls ascend
Finely honed gargoyles would become the carver’s after-life dividend
Bell towers held the ornate orchestral bells
The faithful praying to have them castaway Satan’s spells

Inside the towering ceilings mingled eerily with the skies
While the huge stone columns inspired the pastor to eulogize
Marble alters held the bones of an honoured saint
Parishional inspiration to help overcome the spiritual weight

The young and old would sing hymns and pray the Hail Mary
The bones of the dead with rejoice in the adjacent cemetery
Hallelujah hallelujah the choir would sing after the last amen
Remembering that Jesus so too loved His Mary Magdalene

Thank you,
Joseph Pede
