The Battlefield - My 2013 poem to remember all those who have died in vane

The Battlefield

Muddy fields encrust the rotting flesh

Severed appendages eerily seeking refuge

Maggot-filled berets silently swell

Agonizing cries echo from motionless soldiers

Blood oozing from the myriad of wounds

All excrement slowly baking in the scorching heat

Air filled with the stench of death

Tanks roar as they flatten the carcasses

Now silent guns point towards the heavens

Bullet casing demarcate the skeletal transformation

Dog-tags patiently waiting to be found

Welcome to the grandeur of the battlefield
