Cedarvale
along the muddy river banks
bullrushes and waterlilies
tadpoles and dragon flies
tip-toeing spiders
chirping birds
snoring old toads
slithering garden snakes
mischievous squirrels
Cedarvale swamp was my childhood home
filled with swaying tree branches
dandelion weeds covered the grass
the hills would become my winter wonderland
bridges glared down upon me
shadows of the urban jungle followed me down below
my galoshes instead ran along the quiet stream
a net stuck inside my back pocket
by day’s end the adventurer returned home
my clothes wet, dirty and damp
tadpoles filled my plastic baggie
baby frogs sat calmly in my plastic jar
today there is no more swamp
the little creatures have all gone away
bridges cast bigger shadows
the muddy BANKS are now built with fortress walls
Thank you,
Joseph Pede
