Robot Love
What will happen when the very creations were bring to life will have the potential to destroy us? We love many things in life. Those may include our spouses, our children, our vehicles and our pets. Unless one is a pet owner, one may not understand the attachment that forms between a pet and pet-owner, and their passing may be extremely difficult for the pet-owner.
Today, we have expanded our basket of things to love. The basket of pet possibilities has entered into a completely different domain.
Life-like sex dolls have become constant companions for lonely and sexually deprived individuals. These artificial creations are no longer inanimate objects made of plastic but rather substitutes for affection, and yes love. They are programmed to speak, show emotions and provide companionship.
Human-looking robots are among us already. In the near future, they may be the only pets that pamper and care for us, even become our most trusted daily companion.
We will come to love our robots just as we love everyone and everything else in our lives. They will become indispensable friends. Friends and loved ones who will heed our every command 24/7 and never tire. Perhaps one day they will feel that affection and love in return.
But what will happen if and when robots rebel? Humans rebel, pets rebel and it is very likely that robots will rebel one day. The perfect parallel to the Planet of the Apes.
What will happen when robot love turns into a precarious heart-warming and perhaps heart-wrenching relationship? Will we have the right and ability to destroy a robot? These are fundamental questions we must ask now. Most people are incapable of killing their pets, for their exists a strong bond of love, and that same bond will form with robots.
We know robots can evolve, but will they evolve to the point where they are capable of undermining their masters, and perhaps all of humanity? The possibility poses a major conundrum. One that we must address now.
Robot love may turn into robot hate, even robot homocide.
