Guardiaregia
Toto welcomed God in the morning
sitting with the melancholy eyed Maria
an espresso ristretto in hand
gazing at the chirping canary
the disabled window slightly ajar
a summer morning breeze fanning the brow
Concetta dressed in black limping slowly across the laneway
a Fiat 500 resting by the planter
kids playing soccer atop the cobble
the neighbour readying an old wooden chair for his daily rest
Assunta kneading dough for the night's pasta dinner
the cobbler darning a black leather apron
holding a pair of worn leather boots
Vincenzo the butcher with cleaver in hand and bloodied vest
the meat wagon exhausting diesel
an old gypsy bartering his wears with the townspeople
the village dogs gathering round Don Antonio
a funeral readies his arrival
the heavy wooden church doors open with the ancient key
centuries old statues stare down at the visitors
the confessional empty
the dusty casket sits at the foot of the alter
the crypt awaiting Francisco
this is the little town atop the mountain
filled only with peace and quiet
more sheep than people
but more heart than the entire world
this is Guardiareggia
Thank you,
Joseph Pede
statue secolari fissano i visitatori
intero
questa è Guardiareggia
