Updated Brain Map Identifies Nearly 100 New Regions

The brain looks like a featureless expanse of folds and bulges, but it’s actually carved up into invisible territories. Each is specialized: Some groups of neurons become active when we recognize faces, others when we read, others when we raise our hands.
On Wednesday, in what many experts are calling a milestone in neuroscience, researchers published a spectacular new map of the brain, detailing nearly 100 previously unknown regions — an unprecedented glimpse into the machinery of the human mind.
Scientists will rely on this guide as they attempt to understand virtually every aspect of the brain, from how it develops in children and ages over decades, to how it can be corrupted by diseases like Alzheimer’s andschizophrenia.
“It’s a step towards understanding why we’re we,” said David Kleinfeld, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Diego, who was not involved in the research.
Scientists created the map with advanced scanners and computers running artificial intelligence programs that “learned” to identify the brain’s hidden regions from vast amounts of data collected from hundreds of test subjects, a far more sophisticated and broader effort than had been previously attempted.
While an important advance, the new atlas is hardly the final word on the brain’s workings. It may take decades for scientists to figure out what each region is doing, and more will be discovered in coming decades.
“This map you should think of as version 1.0,” said Matthew F. Glasser, a neuroscientist at Washington University School of Medicine and lead author of the new research. “There may be a version 2.0 as the data get better and more eyes look at the data. We hope the map can evolve as the science progresses.”
The first hints of the brain’s hidden geography emerged more than 150 years ago. In the 1860s, the physician Pierre Paul Broca was intrigued by two of his patients who were unable to speak.
After they died, Broca examined their brains. On the outer layer, called the cortex, he found that both had suffered damage to the same patch of tissue.
That region came to be known as Broca’s area. In recent decades, scientists have found that it becomes active when people speak and when they try to understand the speech of other people.

In the late 1800s, a group of German researchers identified other regions of the cortex, each having distinct types of cells packed together in unique ways. In 1907, Korbinian Brodmann published a catalog of 52 brain regions.
Neuroscientists have relied on his hand-drawn map ever since, adding a modest number of new regions with their own research. “This is the standard for where you are in the brain,” said Dr. Glasser.
Three years ago, Dr. Glasser and his colleagues set out to create a new standard. They drew on data collected by the Human Connectome Project, in which 1,200 volunteers were studied with powerful new scanners.
The project team recorded high-resolution images of each participant’s brain, and then recorded its activity during hours of tests on memory, language and other kinds of thought.
In previous attempts to map the cortex, scientists typically had looked only at one kind of evidence at a time — say, the arrangements of cells. The Human Connectome Project has made it possible to study the brain in much greater detail.
In addition to looking at the activity of the brain, the scientists also looked at its anatomy. They measured the amount of myelin, for example, a fatty substance that insulated neurons. They found sharp contrasts in myelin levels from one region of the cortex to the next.
“We have 112 different types of information we can tap into,” said David C. Van Essen, a principal investigator with the Human Connectome Project at Washington University Medical School.
Using these variables, the scientists trained a computer with data from 210 brains to recognize discrete regions of the cortex. Once the computer profiled the distinctive combinations of myelin, activity and other characteristics, they tested it on 210 other brains.
The computer pinpointed the regions in the new brains 96.6 percent of the time. The scientists found that only a small number of features were required to map the brain. That means that researchers will be able to use their method to map an individual’s brain in a little over an hour of scanning.
The map produced by the computer includes 83 familiar regions, such as Broca’s area, but includes 97 that were unknown — or just forgotten.
In the 1950s, for example, German researchers noticed a patch on the side of the brain in which neurons had little myelin, compared with neighboring regions. But the finding was soon neglected.

“People tended to ignore it, and it was lost in the literature,” said Dr. Van Essen.
The computer rediscovered the odd territory, and Dr. Van Essen and his colleagues found that it becomes unusually active when people listen to stories. That finding suggests the region, which they call 55b, is part of a language network in the brain, along with Broca’s area.
In other parts of the cortex, the scientists were able to partition previously identified regions into smaller ones. For example, they discovered that a large region near the front of the brain, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, actually is made up of a dozen smaller zones.
The region becomes active during many different kinds of thought, ranging from decision-making to deception. It’s possible that each of the newly identified smaller parts is important for one of those tasks.
The computer program developed by the scientists became so adept at mapping the cortex that it could identify hidden regions even when they took on unusual shapes. Twelve of the research subjects, for example, have a 55b region that’s split into two isolated patches. (The researchers don’t know whether this affects how the subjects use language.)
Other neuroscientists hope that the new map will sharpen their experiments, allowing them to discover how the brain’s cogs mesh.
“The next big step is seeing what this can do for us in terms of buying more power,” said Emily S. Finn, a graduate student at Yale University who has used Human Connectome Project data to find links between brain activity and intelligence.
Dr. Kleinfeld predicted that other researchers will find ways to verify the new map’s accuracy. Genetic testing, for example: If 180 regions of the cortex really are distinct, then the neurons in each should share a distinct combination of active genes.
“You can imagine going to these 180 regions, taking a punch of tissue, and seeing if you can really genetically differentiate them,” said Dr. Kleinfeld.
Many experts believe that the brain, on closer inspection, will turn out to be an even greater collective of regions that somehow cooperate for the common good.
“It’s very clear that many of those regions are likely to be composed of smaller pieces,” said Danielle S. Bassett, a neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Van Essen said that he and other scientists will be using the map to track the development of young brains and to look for changes caused by disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.
“We shouldn’t expect miracles and easy answers,” he said, “but we’re positioned to accelerate progress.”

10 Scientific Hints Of Possible Higher Beings

Is another being responsible for our lives or even the entire universe? If you believe in God, you have your answer. However, some mind-boggling studies suggest other possibilities for higher beings who are responsible for our existence.

10The Universe Shouldn’t Exist

10-c-universe-exploding
According to certain studies, the universe should not have survived more than one second. For example, the big bang should have produced equal amounts of matter and antimatter, canceling each other out. Instead, slightly more matter was produced, creating the entire observable universe. We can’t definitively explain this.
In another theory, the universe is in the Higgs field, which gives particles their mass. A large energy field stops our universe from falling into the valley, a deeper field, where the universe couldn’t exist.
However, if the standard model of physics is correct, a rapid expansion of the universe immediately after the big bang should have moved the universe into the valley. This would have destroyed the universe before it was one second old.
The impossibility of life on Earth is also mind-meltingly high. Galaxies couldn’t exist without the right mixture of matter, dark matter, and dark energy. Then Earth had to be the right distance from the Sun. A Jupiter-sized planet also had to attract more asteroids and comets, or Earth’s surface would be too violent to sustain life.
Did life really keep beating these odds, or was the universe helped in some way?

9The Seed Of Life?

According to Francis Crick’s directed panspermia theory, life originated elsewhere and was sent to Earth by advanced beings. An earlier theory of panspermia suggested that life came here on an asteroid or comet.
In July 2013, astrobiologist Milton Wainwright claimed that he found an actual “seed of life.” After launching a weather balloon over England, he captured a metallic ball about the width of a strand of hair. Inside its shell of titanium and vanadium, the ball contained a gooey biological liquid. Many scientists are skeptical of his claims.

Biological SETI

Humans are made up of about 22,000 genes, or 3 percent of the human genome. The other 97 percent is “junk DNA,” which may contain a coded message or “designer tag” if life originated elsewhere or was created by a higher being.
In 2013, two Kazakhstan researchers claimed that they found an ordered sequence of a symbolic language in our junk DNA that would not have happened naturally. However, many critics dismissed their “biological SETI.”
Alternatively, geneticist Francis Collins argued in his book The Language of God that DNA is God’s alphabet and makes up the book of life.

7Cosmic Rays

In 2003, philosopher Nick Bostrom postulated that the universe is a computer simulation, a theory accepted by Elon Musk and Neil deGrasse Tyson. If true, a higher being or beings had to build the simulation. The universe would also be finite because all computers have limits.
Some researchers believe that we may detect this computer simulation if we can find the limits of the universe. To test this, German researchers built universe simulators on a lattice in a quantum computer.
They focused on cosmic rays, which are atom fragments that come from outside the solar system. Cosmic rays have a finite amount of power and deteriorate over time.
When they reach Earth, they all have similar amounts of energy, which is a maximum of 10 electron volts. This suggests that all cosmic rays have similar starting points—like the edge of the simulation lattice of a quantum computer.

6The Spread Of Life

6-panspermia_459375_SMALL
In 2015, a study from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics suggested that life could have spread via panspermia, moving star to star in clusters and “[overlapping] like bubbles in a pot of boiling water.” This simulation also suggests that life could have spread like an epidemic.
Scientists tested two possibilities for bringing life to Earth: by asteroids and by intelligent beings. The result was that both were possible and would have followed the same pattern. If correct, this study also indicates that life exists elsewhere in the galaxy.

Physical Constants

According to theoretical physicist John D. Barrow, we can tell if the universe is a simulation by looking for mistakes or errors in it. Barrow believes that even advanced civilizations would not have complete knowledge of nature’s laws.
There would be notable glitches in the matrix, such as changes in the physical constants. These are physical properties—like the speed of light—that are the same everywhere throughout time.
In 2001, Australian researchers found evidence that the speed of light has been slowing over the last billion years even though this contradicts general relativity. Astronomer John Webb discovered that light from a quasar had absorbed the wrong type of photons on its 12-billion-year journey to Earth.
This could only happen if there was a change in the speed of light or the charge of an electron, both of which are physical constants. Skeptical researchers disagree.
Regardless, no one is sure why physical constants stay constant. But they are critical to the existence of our universe. Some scientists speculate that physical constants are evidence of the universe being “finely tuned” for life to exist.

4Godel’s Ontological Proof

In the 1940s, physicist Kurt Godel tried to prove the existence of God with the mathematical proof above. It is based on this argument by Saint Anselm of Canterbury:
1. There is a great being called God, and nothing greater than God can be imagined.
2. God exists as an idea in the mind.
3. With all other things being equal, a being that exists in both the mind and reality is better than a being that only exists in the mind.
4. Therefore, if God only exists in the mind, then it’s possible that we can imagine a being more powerful than God.
5. However, that contradicts argument one because nothing greater than God can be imagined.
6. Therefore, God exists.
Using modal logic and parallel universes, Godel argued that an all-powerful being exists if he exists in at least one parallel universe. As there are an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of possibilities, one universe has a being so powerful that it would be considered an omnipotent God. Therefore, God exists.
In 2013, two mathematicians processed Godel’s equations on a MacBook and found them to be correct. However, the theorem doesn’t prove that God exists, simply that it’s possible that an all-powerful being could exist according to modal logic.

3Reality Doesn’t Exist Unless We’re Looking At It

3-virtual-reality_86825403_SMALL
A video game constructs itself when you’re looking at a particular area. Otherwise, it doesn’t exist. Reality is similar because certain aspects only exist if we are looking at them.
This mysterious phenomenon is based in quantum mechanics. Subatomic objects are usually either waves or particle-like solid objects. Rarely, they can be both. Some examples include light and objects that have a mass similar to electrons.
When these objects aren’t being observed, they sit in a dual state. But when they are measured, they “decide” to become either a wave or a solid object. These foundations of our reality lie dormant until we look at them, which isn’t much different than the simulated world of a video game.

2Holographic Principle

2-holographic-universe
In 1997, theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena proposed that our universe is a two-dimensional hologram—completely flat—that we perceive in three dimensions. Tiny strings called gravitons vibrate to create this holographic universe. If correct, this would help solve some differences between quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theory of gravity.
Some studies show that a 2-D universe is possible. Japanese researchers computed the internal energy of a black hole, the event horizon position, and other properties in a 3-D world and then computed the same in a 2-D world with no gravity. The calculations matched. Another model showed that the universe is 2-D if space-time is flat.
Researchers at Fermilab are using a giant laser to look for “holographic noise,” which is evidence of “buffering” in the cosmos. If a 3-D holographic universe built on a 2-D system of moving lines (like lines of coding) lags, that strongly indicates that the universe is a simulation.

1Coding In The Cosmos

According to theoretical physicist Sylvester James Gates, compelling evidence suggests that we are living in a simulation. While working on superstring equations with adinkras (symbols used in supersymmetry algebra), Gates found coding created by mathematician Richard Hamming called “doubly even self-dual linear binary error-correcting block codes.” Gates questioned if this basic coding is somehow responsible for controlling the universe.
In the video above, Gates said that “[an] unsuspected connection suggests that these codes may be ubiquitous in nature and could even be embedded in the essence of reality. If [so], we might have something in common with the Matrix science fiction films, which depict a world where every human being’s experience is the product of a virtual reality–generating computer network.”

Jewish Murder of the Russian Imperial Family

Mike Walsh

Before the outbreak of the Great War (1914 ~ 1918) there were available in selected Jewish-owned Warsaw shops greeting cards with images that were unavailable for Gentiles. The postcards carried the image of the tzadik. This is an image of a rabbinical Jew with the Torah in his one hand and a white fowl in the other. On these illegal greeting cards, available only by clandestine means, the head of the depicted fowl is clearly shown to be the Imperial Russian Tsar Nicholas II. Below this image is the inscription in Hebrew:  “This is a sacrificial animal so is my cleansing; it will be my replacement and cleansing the victim.”

This relates to the Yom Kippur ritual in which the live fowl is swung about the head before being slaughtered by the shechita method; the creature’s blood is then drained. This secret greeting card is a facsimile of American (Jewish) greeting cards that first became available in the United States in 1907. The ritual slaughter of Tsar Nicholas II was the aspiration of many Jews. This Talmudic act of treason or assassination is since airily dismissed as due to the Tsar’s alleged anti-Semitism ~ as if this is justification.

Yakov Sverdlov, whose Jewish name is Yankel Solomon, ordered the murder of Tsar Nicholas II, his family and assistants. For this particular Jewish revolutionary regicide was a cherished dream.  The evidence of this is discovered in the content of leaflets written by Yakov Sverdlov and dated May 19, 1905. This date is the birthday of Nicholas II: “Struck your hour, the last hour of you and all yours!  This is a terrible judgment, the revolution is coming.”
The imperial family was executed without the knowledge of the Central Cheka (Extraordinary Commission). Yekaterinburg Soviet leadership: “Ural Regional Council. Chairman Beloborodov. The composition of the Cheka leadership were Goloshchekin, Voykov, Safarov, Didkovskiy, Syromolotov, Yurovsky, Bykov, Zhilinsky, Chutskaev.  All the massacre’s organisers, accompanying guards and key members of the assassination squad were militants involved in the organisation of the future Communist party (RSDLP). The party was founded in the Urals during the winter of 1905 / 1906 when the group was under the direction of Yakov Sverdlov.
Long before the 1917 Wall Street financed coup that delivered Tsarist Russia to mostly American corporate interests Yakov Sverdlov and a number of major figures of Bolshevism had been exiled and were serving their sentences in Siberia. Yakov Sverdlov was banished to Turukhansk as was the dwarfish bank robbing terrorist Joseph Stalin, Julius Martov (Tsederbaum), and Aron Solts.
Through the region of Tyumen, Tobolsk and Yekaterinburg pass the Trans-Siberian Railway (Transsib). This network of railways connects Moscow with the Russian Far East and the Sea of Japan. This network delivered the Tsar and his family when they were taken into custody by the Wall Street financed Bolshevik insurgents.

Yakov Sverdlov even in demonic Jewish minds was known to be pathologically sadistic. Such were the gratuitous cruelties inflicted by him that party members already inured to extreme violence were appalled. Jakov Sverdlov gathered around him the most ruthless elements of the association. On the eve of the 1905 coup attempt Yakov Sverdlov, still in the Urals, formed what was known as The Battle Squad of the People’s Weapons (BONV). This terrorist group slaughtered police officers and any thought to be sympathetic to the Tsarist system. The group enriched itself through armed raids on banks, post offices, cash desks, trains and shops. “They were desperate murderers” writes E. Hlystalov who describes the group’s leaders as “the frail bespectacled Yakov Sverdlov.”
Philippe (Jewish name Shaya-Isay Fram) Goloshchekin was personal ambassador of Yakov Sverdlov and acted in all the group’s important matters.
Across the Ural region Sverdlov placed in government positions those he considered loyal to him. These occupied different positions such as Foodstuffs Commissioner, Commissioner of Justice and Commissioner of Supplies; all of local authority office. Soon, the Ural region became Yakov Sverdlov’s personal fiefdom.  It was not by chance that the great city of Yekaterinburg during 1924 ~ 1991 bore the name of Sverdlovsk. The street on which was located Ipatiev House where the massacres was carried out was renamed Sverdlov Street. In 1991 this city’s name was returned to its original Yekaterinburg.
On July 16, 1918, the day before the massacre was carried out the Imperial family were transported to Yekaterinburg. The train consisted of the locomotive and a single passenger car. Passengers included a person dressed in a black robe and also a rabbi whose face was hidden. Of special mention was Chairman of the Ural Regional Soviet Philippe (Isaac-Shaya) Goloshchekin. The rabbi first looked at the basement of the Ipatiev house. There, he traced cabalistic signs on the wall and the inscription, ‘The king sacrificed. The kingdom destroyed.’ During the same day he departed. He did so after appointing the assassin Yankel Yurovsky, the son of Chaim Yurovsky who had been exiled from Ukraine to Siberia after being charged with theft.

1st row: Nicholas II and his family (from left to right: Olga, Maria, Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, Anastasia, Alexei and Tatiana). 2nd row: Surgeon to the Tsar Eugene Botkin and Royal chef Ivan Kharitonov. 3rd row: maid Anna Demidova and the Tsar’s valet Colonel Alexei Trupp. All ritually slaughtered at Ipatiev House. Those who took part in this ritualistic slaughter as far as can be ascertained were all of Jewish race.
In attendance at the bloodbath on July 17 / 18, 1918 was the Yakov Sverdlov and Brigade Commissar Vasily Yakovlev (Konstantin Myachin). Their task was to later remove secretly all remains of the Imperial Russian family. In the immediate aftermath the bodies were mutilated and dismembered before being deposited in a shallow mine. The contents of the mine could be seen from the surface.
Leading executioners of the Imperial family whose Jewish names appear in brackets.
(Yankel Solomon) Yakov Sverdlov, Philippe Goloshchyokin (Shaya-Isay Fram Goloshchekin) and Pyotr Voykov (Pinhus Wainer).
Beloborodov Alexander Georgievich (Vaisbart Yankel Isidorovich), Konstantin Myachin (Vasily Yakovlev) and    Georgy Safarov (Voldin).

The killers from left to right: Peter Ermakov, Mikhail Medvedev (Kudrin),  Pavel Medvedev,  Yakov Yurovsky and Grigory Nikulin.
The Jewish firebrand Yakov Yurovsky personally supervised the execution of the Imperial family.

He was also responsible for administering the coup de grâce and afterwards searching the bodies. Pyotr Voykov (Pinhus Wainer) also took part in the actual shooting and then assisting in administration of the coup de grâce. He was also delegated to destroy the family’s remains by a combination of dismemberment and the use of sulphuric acid.  Scrawled writing was afterwards found on the walls of the room in which the Imperial family was slaughtered. These were translated and transcribed by German-Jewish poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856). The lines appear on the backdrop wall to the slaughter and near the window in the basement of Ipatiev House. ‘Belsatzar ward in selbiger Nacht / Von seinen Knechten umgebracht,” “Belsatzar was, on the same night, killed by his slaves.”
Belshazzar, the Gentile king of Babylon who, in the Old Testament story, saw ‘the writing on the wall’ foretelling his destruction (Daniel 5) and was killed as punishment for his offenses against Israel’s God. In a clever play on the Heine quotation, the unknown writer, almost certainly one of the killers, has substituted Belsatzar for Heine’s spelling Belsazar in order to signal even more clearly his intended symbolism. The Heine inscription described the racial / ethnic nature of the murders: ‘A Gentile king had just been killed as an act of Jewish retribution.’

The destruction of the corpses began the following day and was assisted by Jakov Yurovsky and carried out under the direction of Pyotr Voikov (Pinhus Wainer). Supervision also was Goloshchekin and Beloborodov; all of anti-Christian Jewish race.
Pyotr Voikov recalled that scene with an involuntary shudder. He said that when this work was completed the dismembered cadavers; human bloody trunks, arms, legs, torso and head were thrown down a forest mine. Upon this dreadful scene of carnage was poured gasoline and sulphuric acid. In a vain attempt to destroy all evidence of the massacre the parts were afterwards burned for two days.
Pyotr Voikov said “It was a terrible picture. We, the participants of the burning corpses were downright depressed about this nightmare. Even Yurovsky in the end could not resist and said that even those few days and he would have gone mad.” (Besedovsky G. Z. ‘On the Road to Thermidor’ M. 1997. S.111-116).
The site of the carnage and the later failed attempts to completely dispose of the family’s bodies was temporarily liberated from the Red Army by the opposing White Armies.  Nikolai Sokolov, the investigator appointed by the Commander of the White Armies Admiral Alexander Kolchak, drew the following conclusions: ‘The corpses were brought to the mine under the cover of darkness in the early morning, July 17, 1918. Clothing was roughly cut (damage is found on buttons, hooks and eyes). The corpses were then chipped and completely destroyed by fire and sulphuric acid. At the end of the operation the bodies were completely incinerated leaving only the melted lead from the bullets from which they had died.
To explain the later finding of jewels Nikolai Sokolov explained that, according to the testimony of the witness Tyegleva, the Grand Duchess secretly sewed jewellery in her clothing. During the burial some of the valuables went unnoticed. The princesses had also secreted gems in their apparel. When the mine shaft was later excavated there was discovered more items of jewellery. From the torn brassieres a rain of pearls and precious stones cascaded. Some jewellery, mostly earrings and pendants lay unnoticed in the surrounding grass. In view of the discovered wealth the executioners and body disposal team worked quickly to finish their work. They did not pay attention to individual items. Witnesses reported the movement of cars and trucks, carts and riders near Ganina Yama 15 km north of Yekaterinburg. This area July 17 to 19, 1918 was cordoned off by Red Guards. Nikolai Sokolov writes that these days also heard grenade explosions.
Nikolai Sokolov managed to find two orders drawn up by Pyotr Voykov on July 17, 1918. The orders were placed with a local drugstore named Russian Society. With each order was the requirement to supply employee Commissariat Zimin with sulphuric acid. The first requirement was of 5lbs with 3lbs more placed in the second jar. In total, Zimin was issued 11lbs of sulphuric acid for which was paid 196 roubles and 50 kopecks. According to Nikolai Sokolov, the sulphuric acid was delivered to the mine on 17 and 18 July. At the mine traces of two large fires were found. Here, dozens of objects have been discovered that were related to the murdered Imperial family.  Many items were burned, some were destroyed. Nothing was spared of the Tsar’s family; even their pet dogs were slaughtered.

Nikolai Sokolov. To carry out his investigations the Nikolai Sokolov dressed in peasant in order that he draws as little attention to himself as possible.
At this point, the reward for the assassination of the Imperial family posted by Wall Street Jewish banker Jacob Schiff was settled with the Bolsheviks. This German born Jew was later to boast and celebrate the funding of the 1917 Bolshevik coup which overthrew Russia’s legitimate government. Schiff personally offered a substantial reward for the murder of the Russian royal family. This Jewish banker’s investment funded a tyranny which, at the time of its collapse in 1990, is estimated to have directly or indirectly led to loss of life estimated between 70 and 100 million mostly Christians. Jacob Schiff appears to have achieved the dubious distinction of being the biggest killer in the history of humankind.
“Will you say for me to those present at tonight’s meeting how deeply I regret my inability to celebrate with the Friends of Russian Freedom the actual reward of what we hoped for and striven for these long years.” ~ Jacob Schiff, New York bankers, ‘Kuhn, Loeb & Co. Quote: New York Times, March 24. 1917.
The Civil War following the American backed coup was to continue until 1922. Upon the final expulsion of the White Armies corporate America and Europe moved in to plunder the assets of the nation that was once Imperial Russia.
