tragedy of the morrow
the cemetery is a place filled with quiet and peace
trees sway midst the gentle breeze
a majestic old oak defies death
a rose bush undaunted by the odds
squirrels jumping to and fro
an old woman dressed in black can be seen
caressing the head stone of a loved one
kneeling as she ponders life long ago
sparrows chirp as
an excavator jousts atop the manicured lawn
readying someone for eternal rest
i watch and continue to walk atop what once was
looking about, imagining what remains of the remains
buried caskets filled with one-time life
corpses of men, women and children
now nourishment for the underground life
skeletons freed of flesh
their names providing only clues
their end a mystery
their presence silent in this material plane
yet their shadows walk about us
their earthly essence having provided us all
some of the "all" that is
death appears so distant
yet clues to its presence are everywhere
a crucifix tilting to one side
a statue of Mother Mary tarnished by time
a cracked grave marker neath the dirt and weeds
a statue of Jesus reminding us that He conquered death
a polished canon seems so out of place
to walk in a cemetery is to experience life
it is all of what we once were
and the "seed" of all that we will become
what we bury and forget
is the tragedy of the morrow
thank you,
