D-Day

D-Day

It was a clear unobstructed morning
The winds were judiciously blowing
A full moon flickered at the precipice of impending war
The gods were in repose

The invasion armada arrived atop the horizon
Greeted by low lying clouds and
Angry waters
The vomit of sea sick soldiers fed the ocean deep

The preacher prayed for another tomorrow
Stomach cramps accompanied the faltering knees
Whispers of angels ominously everywhere
The thunder of missiles accompanied the silent tears

Blood poured onto the beaches of Normandy that day
Tides of salt water distilled the blood-soaked sand
Bullets as mosquitos delivered death
Bombs instantly transformed the living into ghosts

There was no place to run or hide
Luck the only reason for life and not death
Flesh splattered in all directions
Bones crackled as if by the sound of a butcher's cleaver

Utah, Omaha, Gold, Sword or Juno
Places of death, not glory
Where rusted shells wormed into the bosom of Mother Earth
Where human flesh fertilized the ocean floor

Death Day had arrived
Enemies embraced as they climbed into the heavens
For those who remained all had been lost
The horror of war became a life's journey of remembrance

Thank you,
Joseph Pede

You do the fallen soldier great honour by visiting the grounds of eternity rather than standing in silence, for he is surrounded by silence. Eternity is graced with headstones, crucifixes, and carvings of angels and saints. Let not the wind and rain erase their names before you have had a chance to salute them. Their spirits yell to us everyday, yet we fail to acknowledge their coded messages.  You must NOT stand silent as death and war continue to haunt Mankind's journey. Do not take the easy road.
