An Evil Fraternity
worms unsettled by the tremor of marching boots
squirrels housed deep within the trees’ rotting roots
birds left to wander the perilous skies
soldiers sheltering their fear and camouflaged cries
the prophets foretold of these sounds of silence
when men of treachery and the devil formed a secret alliance
when depraved minds sought an apocalyptic end
when blood and guts were gambled to earn a rapturous dividend
Houses of God remained empty in the town squares
opaque apparitions filled the bishops’ red velvet chairs
pews coated with the remnants of daily prayers
emptied baptismal fonts envisaged only scrying nightmares
forsaken cemeteries awaited the arrival of the heroic fools
a place they learned was absent of all the rules
where bitter enemies contested their anger in the eternity
discovering they perished for the greed of an evil fraternity
Thank you,
Joseph Pede
