relic of the past
yesterday I was young
the world was my stage
i’d wake to the sound of frolicking birds
only six, but the espresso tasted great
the raw egg was spiked with a little Nestle’s Quick
and Annisette
dad would drive me to school in his Chevy Nova
i’d kiss him on the lips and say goodbye
the field was full of kids, and balls
teachers looked old but they really weren’t
yesterday aged people
lunch was roasted red peppers and salami
wrapped in two thick slices of crusted bread
the afternoon was filled with leisure time
then the bell rang
off with friends to enjoy the walk home
a wrestling match with Banana or Pat
a stop over at Bill’s billiards for a slice of pizza
or just play catch in the park
dinner time was my time with Nonna
after all, she taught me to cook
i mean everything
dinner was always on the table when my parents arrived
Nonno was as deaf as a doorknob and he had no clue
he didn’t say much
just read the bible night and day
but he had great spiked hair, all grey
a David Bowie type with a full moustache
the Zenith warmed the tubes after a great plate of pasta
hockey was at it’s best, especially on 26 inches
a late night snack meant a whole box of Chocolate Chip cookies
with a bowl of milk of course
they tasted better back then
a good night sleep meant I would do it all over again tomorrow
kind of crazy how time flies
now i’m a relic of the past
thank you,
joseph pede
