On the death of Stephen Lewis

Rest in Peace

I heard Pierre Poilievre state that he hopes Stephen Lewis rests in peace. First I reflected on Stephen Lewis. He was a man who sought social justice for all, often times defying Israel's political positioning. Eloquence accompanied his mild-mannered persona. He died just after his son accepted the NDP leadership nomination and one day before Passover. Stephen Lewis by all accounts was a good man, but will he rest in peace, especially when so much of the world remains in pieces.

War and disease bring about death and destruction, often times permanently separating children and young adults from their families. When a country goes to war they do so believing they are just in their cause, never measuring the value of the human life they will expend. It's tragic how many young people die defending the credo of the corporate, political or religious megalomaniacs. Young children and soldiers should not be the harvest, but rather the seed of a nation. Burying them serves only to nourish Mother Nature. There are never enough tears to bring them back to life.

I'm not sure Mr. Lewis will necessarily rest in peace. A caring soul, knowing humanity remains unkind, immoral and unjust, will likely leave us with regret and a heavy heart. What we should say of Mr. Lewis, is that he brought us a little bit closer to God, even if God was not his objective.

Bon Voyage
Joseph Pede
