The Liberal government's proposed expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) to individuals whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness is currently suspended until St Patrick's Day March 17, 2027. The federal government has repeatedly delayed this phase of implementation to allow provincial health systems and practitioners more time to safely prepare.

According to legend, St. Patrick brought Christianity to the island, made the shamrock fashionable and freed Ireland from snakes. The holiday marks St. Patrick's death and has been observed as a religious holiday in Ireland for over 1500 years. In Canada, this day will mark the day the snakes return. It is very likely CAMH will cease operations soon thereafter.

In 2027, Canada will no longer have an unemployment, healthcare and housing problem. In Canada, mental illness affects about 20% of youth, with young people aged 15 to 24 experiencing higher rates of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders than any other demographic. Up to 40% of adolescents report symptoms of depression and anxiety, and 1 in 4 young adults have a diagnosed mental illness.
