Controversial Bill C-27 resumed debate this week and we need to move FAST to ensure that dangerous provisions that would let businesses to use YOUR information without your knowledge or consent are removed.
This Bill isn’t about protecting your privacy. It’s about helping corporations mine your data for their own gain.
This has to CHANGE. Will you help us get loud and ensure the government knows that you won’t tolerate them selling your right to consent to fuel corporate greed?
Bill C-27, AKA The Digital Charter Implementation Act, puts the commercial interests of private companies above the privacy interests of people in Canada. It does this in three main ways:
- It fails to recognize privacy as a fundamental human right;
- It weakens PIPEDA’s consent rules by removing the existing obligation on companies to ensure their users understand the ways in which their personal information will be used, and replacing it with a much less rigorous requirement;
- It introduces an extensive list of exceptions to consent, including one so broad it will make consent unnecessary for any interaction in which a person asks a company for a service.
Imagine an app getting unfettered access to all of your personal data, now and in the future, to use however they wish, just because you clicked once.
Allowing corporations to dictate YOUR privacy protections is ABSURD. We need changes made to this bill and we need them FAST. But the only way to do that is to GET LOUD NOW. Will you help us?
Thank you for all that you do. Nothing that we achieve would be possible without an incredible community of allies, supporters, and believers. Thank you for being part of it.
