the perfect trap
i forgot what matters
not intentionally, it just happened
life got busy, priorities shifted
the compass kept spinning
high school was a blur
university, a place to lose yourself
a den of iniquity where i discovered
my soon-to-be enemies
friends became the departed
it was all a hassle
the first job was a tour of duty
i learned the anatomy of rejection
the "who-you-knew" knew fuck all
they couldn't help, they were just a nuisance
i got the poker, others got the pot
they knew someone who knew
finally came the 9-to-5
inked with a branding iron
a chosen one finally became the spouse
debt grew with each dinner out
ballooned with each extended vacation
the house was a leap
the mortgage a chokehold
i mattered less and less
just the one whom people depended upon
what do you do when the little one appears?
they only grow
and the more they grow, the more they eat
devouring everything
then, something changed
Big Brother grew more formidable
B.B. was everywhere
whether I mattered, or didn't matter
didn't matter at all
B.B. had me by the balls
the perfect trap
i went for a joyride and lost
i didn't beat the odds
thank you,
joseph pede
