poem - with our money

with our money

the polling stations are open
the candidates are off
the political landscape is about to change
a new variety of weed will soon take root
some old dandelions will triumph and prevail
the grass will not be greener
just an alternative thickness and hue
the winners won't matter
for the electorate will continue to lose
just in time for Thanksgiving
a time to thank Colombus and Cabato
or to invoke Sankofa, not Sanka
remembering how they pissed off the Natives
making room for the Pilgrims
nonetheless, the political chambers await their arrival
oaths in hand, God in the closet
newly acquired diapers fitting taut
graft and corruption will soon be on display
fools finding folly in fanaticism
providing excuses on how to best spend their lies
with our money

thank you,
joseph pede
