poem - the quickening

the quickening

the quickening is fast approaching
human vessels, now in danger
this the time of restless souls
where shadows trap the tired troupes
this a time the dead wander throughout the thickened mist
seeking the comfort of a home to slumber
a place to undo their eternal unrest
a place Old Stingy Jack can escape the psalms of exorcism
a time for him to find the boundaries of life and death
no slice of a pumpkin pie will ease his unholy mass
for he is a soul denied of salvation
born of ancient twisted lore
famed among the ghastly orange facades of light
sentinels with jagged teeth and eyes aflame
they are the jack-o'-lanterns of the night
but beware the Wicker Man
for he seeks the lesser of the soul
warm flesh to occupy his make-shift cages
sacrificial quarry to amuse Epstein's earthly coven
hungry witches scurrying atop their brooms
hoping the quickening takes the earth
avenging the madness of Stingy Jack

thank you,
joseph pede
